No other resource on earth can match the environmental advantages of wood. It is the only natural resource on earth that is renewable and sustainable. We cannot grow more steel, aluminum, plastic, or concrete and the energy costs to produce these products are far more expensive and environmentally damaging than processing wood. Clearly the world should be using more wood, not less. But nations must make a global commitment to reforestation, to growing our daily wood, just as we grow our daily bread.

Teak is native to Burma, India, and Thailand. Outside of these countries, there is virtually no teak grown in natural tropical forests. The teak tree flourishes within a very narrow band, approximately 10 to 15 degrees, around the equator. Tectona Grandis excels in well-drained volcanic soils, which have a distinct dry season. It also excels in plantations. Teak has been grown throughout Central and South America with much success. Today, we have made extensive progress on seed development and cloning research which yield faster growing, straighter trees with fewer knots.

Today’s consumer world-wide is informed and recognizes the need to conserve and manage our natural forests. Producing teak wood in a sustainable manner is one way to encourage reforestation of available lands to accommodate the world’s demand for lumber. Companies who have made large investments in reforestation projects, people, facilities, and equipment to produce goods from their plantations are economically motivated to produce in a sustainable manner. It does not make economic sense to cut all of your trees with no plan for the future need for logs. New teak plantations continue to spawn throughout Central and South America, thus assuring teak product users of future supplies.
