Is teak resistant to scratches and dents?
Teak is a hardwood, and although it is slightly softer than oak, it is very resiliant against ordinary wear and tear. As with any hardwood, it's advisable to coat the wood with a good finish.
Is teak a good choice for indoors?
Teak makes an excellent choice for flooring inside your home. Its resistance to warping and swelling make it a superior choice over oak or other hardwoods. With it's pleasing colors and grain structure, teak wood is the best choice for an attractive floor.
Is teak a sustainable forest product?
Our real teak flooring is certified as "green" by the Forestry Stewardship Council and can be used in any project where sustainable products are needed or desired. It is forested from plantations that are replanted and no chemicals are used in the production of the trees. Watersheds are protected and our producers work closely with local governments to protect natural resources.
How is the flooring installed?
Flooring comes in 3/8" and 5/8" thick planks or strips for glue down or nail down applications. It can be glued down to a solid base material such as plywood or concrete or installed with the same technique as traditional wood flooring. While the 3/8" is typically glued down the 5/8" may also be glued as well as nailed.
Can I scrape the floor for a more rustic finish?
Yes, however depending on the depth of the scraping it might be necessary to use 5/8" as a minimum.
Can the flooring come Pre-finished?
We have several finishes available including honey gold, walnut, natural and rojo. Contact us for other colors and their availability within our network of producers.
Does the flooring come in different widths?
Our teak flooring comes in 2 1/4, 3 1/4 and 4 3/4 widths. All are boxed for easy handling.
Do special process have to be used for teak?
Teak flooring can be installed by the same methods as other hardwood floors.
Does teak need to be finished?
Teak should be sealed or at least oiled so the wood does not dry out and crack. It can have a sealer put on it indoors to maintain the oils in the wood, or simply oiled with a clear oil or a colored oil stain if it is outdoors .
Can I install my teak in an area that will get wet?
Teak has been used for years on ships and boats and if cared for it will out-last conventional hardwoods and recover well if soaked with water.
Is teak a good outdoor wood?
Teak makes an excellent wood for outdoor use as it has good stability and little or no swelling when it gets wet.
Can I build a deck out of teak?
We have 7/8" an 5/8" thick rounded edge deck boards 3 1/2" wide in random lengths 8,10 & 12'. So, yes, you sure can.
What spacing do the supports need to be on for the teak decking?
The 7/8" decking can be spaced on 24" or less centers and 5/8" decking should be supported on 16" or less centers.
How can I attach down the teak decking?
You can use hidden fastener systems that are on the underside of the wood, small head trim screws from the surface or standard colored deck screws. It is advised to pre-drill holes in the decking to avoid splitting, as this is a hardwood.
