How will moisture affect cypress fences?

Cypress is a very hearty outdoor wood and will work well in wet climates, lasting as long as most other commonly used outdoor heartwoods.

Does the wood mildew? What about insects?

Mountain Cypress is naturally resistant to mildew and rot It belongs to the same family as yellow cedar and Hinoki which have Nootkatin and Charmic acid contents that act as "built-in" fungicides and insecticides.

Is Cypress a sustainable product?

There is an abundant supply of plantation grown wood from our suppliers. We are currently working with them to have the forestry and milling process certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council as a sustainable "green" building product delivered under fair trade practices.

What grain structure does cypress have?

Cypress has a very close grain structure with few knots and discolorations and is easily machined. .

What color will the untreated cypress become?

Our cypress fences have turned a light honey gold over 12 months time.

Can I stain cypress fences?

Cypress readily accepts many types of stain very well and we have several examples on or picture page.

How can I attach the boards for my fence?

The preferred method is using a pneumatic nailer however because cypress is a tight grain medium hard wood the nailer should be adjusted so the head gets placed flush on the surface to minimize splitting. Screws may also be used with good results.

What rails can I use?

Any wood can be used to nail the pickets too. Because the cypress will last a long time it is advisable to use Cedar or treated pine.

Does the cypress have a strong aroma?

Cypress has a pleasant aroma and has been used inside homes and around individuals who are allergic to some other wood species.

Does the wood split badly?

Our test results on cypress fences indicate that end splits are not any more numerous than our cedar test cases. We treat the ends with wax to slow the drying of the wood and reduce the splitting even more.

What sizes are the boards?

The boards are 5/8" thick and come in full 6" and 4" widths.
